You’ve read the material. You’ve tried the pointers. You’ve even had moments where something shifted — a glimpse, a gap, a second where the usual noise went quiet. And now the question arises: Is this actually working?
The question feels reasonable. You’ve been conditioned to measure progress. Every self-help book, every therapy modality, every spiritual path you’ve tried has given you metrics. Sessions completed. Insights gained. Emotions processed. Breakthroughs achieved. You want to know if you’re doing it right. You want confirmation that your investment of time and attention is paying off.
But here’s the problem: the question itself comes from a framework. The desire to measure progress is the achievement framework running. The need for confirmation is the approval framework seeking validation. The whole apparatus of “Is this working?” assumes there’s a project underway, a goal to reach, a better version of you being constructed somewhere in the future.
Liberation isn’t a project. You aren’t building something. You’re seeing through something.
The Wrong Metrics
Modern culture has trained you to evaluate everything through productivity logic. Hours invested should yield proportional returns. Effort should produce measurable outcomes. If you can’t track it, it doesn’t count.
So you try to apply this logic to Liberation. You look for:
- Fewer negative thoughts
- More peace, more often
- Consistent calm under pressure
- Spiritual experiences increasing
- Problems resolving faster
None of these are the right metrics. Some of them might happen. Some might not. Some might happen and then unhappen. Tracking them keeps you inside the framework you’re trying to see through.
The pursuit of spiritual progress is still pursuit. The achievement of enlightenment is still achievement-framework operating. You’ve just changed what you’re achieving. The machinery is identical.
What Actually Shifts
Liberation doesn’t add peace to your life. It reveals that peace was already here, obscured by the constant activity of framework defense. So the question isn’t “Am I getting more peaceful?” The question is “Am I noticing what was always here?”
This is a completely different orientation. One is accumulation — gathering more peace, more awareness, more liberation. The other is subtraction — seeing through what was covering what’s already present. The felt sense of these two orientations couldn’t be more different. Accumulation feels like effort, like building, like progress toward a goal. Subtraction feels like relaxing, like stopping, like recognizing what was never actually missing.
When Liberation is working, you catch the framework running. Not every time. Not perfectly. But where before the framework was invisible — just “how things are” — now you see it as a framework. You see the machinery. The belief appears as a belief, not as truth. The identity appears as a role, not as what you are. The automatic thought gets noticed as automatic.
This noticing doesn’t always feel good. Sometimes it feels worse, initially. You’re seeing how much of your life has been running on autopilot. You’re seeing how much suffering was generated by something you didn’t even know was there. This can be disorienting, even painful. But disorientation isn’t failure. It’s the old certainty losing its grip.
The Anger Diagnostic
There is one metric that Liberation uses, and it’s specific: anger frequency and intensity.
Not because anger is bad. Not because you should suppress it. But because anger is the most visible form of resistance. Anger is the “no” to what is. Anger is a framework defending itself against reality.
All suffering is resistance. Anxiety is resistance to what might happen. Depression is resistance to what did happen. Shame is resistance to what you are. Guilt is resistance to what you did. And anger is resistance in its most obvious, unmistakable form.
So as Liberation works, anger naturally decreases. Not because you’re controlling it. Not because you’ve learned better coping mechanisms. But because there’s less framework to defend. When you’re not identified with a belief, you don’t need to protect it. When you’re not attached to an outcome, its failure doesn’t generate rage. When you’re not invested in being right, being wrong doesn’t trigger you.
Track this over weeks and months. Not obsessively — that would be another framework. But honestly. Are you getting angry less often? When anger arises, does it pass faster? Do situations that used to trigger you now land differently?
If anger is decreasing, everything is decreasing. The same mechanism that generates anger generates all the other forms of suffering. As that mechanism loosens, all of its outputs reduce.
The Recognition Test
Here’s something you can notice right now, as you read this:
There’s awareness of these words. There’s understanding happening. There might be agreement or disagreement, interest or skepticism. But underneath all of that — what’s aware?
The thoughts about whether Liberation is working are noticed by something. The question itself appears in something. What is that something?
This isn’t a trick question. It’s not trying to get you to some special state. It’s pointing to what’s already the case. Awareness is here. It was here before you started reading. It will be here after you stop. It doesn’t come and go. It doesn’t improve or decline. It’s not the result of practice.
When you notice this — even for a moment — that’s what Liberation points to. Not a state you need to achieve. Not an experience you need to have more often. Just this. The aware presence that’s always here, whether you notice it or not.
Liberation is working when this recognition becomes more natural. Not forced. Not a technique you apply. Just a noticing that happens. “Oh, right. I’m here. I was always here. The drama is happening in me, but I’m not the drama.”
The Trap of Spiritual Progress
Spiritual culture has created an entire industry around progress. Levels of consciousness. Stages of awakening. Before and after transformation stories. Teachers who’ve “made it” and students who are “on the path.”
This is all framework. Useful framework, perhaps — it gets people started, gives them direction, creates community. But framework nonetheless. And at some point, it becomes the obstacle rather than the support.
The idea that you’re “not there yet” keeps you seeking. The concept of “more awakened” creates a hierarchy where you’re always below someone. The measurement of progress keeps attention on the measuring instead of on what’s being measured. You become so focused on tracking your journey that you miss that the destination was never somewhere else.
Liberation doesn’t fit on a progress chart. The Cage Score in the Liberation Companion isn’t measuring how liberated you are — it’s measuring how tightly you’re gripping specific frameworks. The Liberation Score isn’t ranking you against other seekers — it’s simply showing what percentage of your examined frameworks have been seen through. These are tools for seeing, not badges for collecting.
If you find yourself comparing your progress to others, or feeling proud of how liberated you’re becoming, or anxious that you’re not progressing fast enough — those are frameworks running. See them. That’s the practice.
What Remains Constant
Your life circumstances might or might not change. Some people’s external situations transform dramatically after Liberation. Others continue in the same job, same relationship, same daily routine — but experience it completely differently. Neither outcome proves or disproves anything.
What remains constant — whether circumstances change or not — is the awareness in which circumstances appear. This was never affected by your problems. It was never damaged by your traumas. It was never improved by your achievements. It simply is.
The question “Is this working?” assumes something needs to work. It assumes you’re broken and need fixing. It assumes there’s a destination and you need to arrive. But what if you were never broken? What if you’re already here?
The cage is real. The beliefs, the patterns, the automatic thoughts — these exist and they generate genuine suffering. But the prisoner? The one who’s supposedly trapped inside? That’s the illusion. There is no prisoner. There’s just awareness, temporarily identified with the cage’s contents.
When you see this — really see it, not just understand it — the question dissolves. Not because you’ve found the answer. But because you’ve recognized that the question was asked by something that doesn’t actually exist. The framework asking “Am I making progress?” is itself what’s being seen through.
A Different Question
Instead of “Is Liberation working?” try this:
What’s here when I’m not trying to get somewhere?
Sit with that. Not as a meditation technique. Not as a practice to do correctly. Just as an honest inquiry. When you stop reaching for the next state, the next insight, the next level of understanding — what’s already present?
The peace that Liberation points to isn’t the peace of getting what you want. It’s the peace that exists prior to all seeking. It was always here. You were moving away from what was already the case.
This is what you actually are. Not the one who’s trying to become liberated. Not the one measuring progress. Not the one succeeding or failing at the spiritual project. Just this. Aware presence. Here. Now. Before the question. After the answer.
That’s working. That was always working. You just hadn’t noticed.
